Potty Training Day 1.

Before I took her diaper off I got the room set up. Because I don’t know when she’s going or how long in between.
🚽 I got the potty in front of the tv and on the tile.

❄️Put on frozen and got her water and a snack (that makes her thirsty).
Snacks that I got were: wheat thins, veggie straws, peanut butter granola bar, peanuts, apple sauce and triskits. My kids only drink water. They don’t like juice or milk.

👝Got wipes and a towel. just in case of accidents.
🗑A trash can close by for the wipes.

👙Extra panties close by. Got her Frozen panties from Target.

👚I dressed her in a favorite shirt of hers that was a little short so it didn’t get in the way of going potty.
📊Made a chart so I could see how well she was doing and what times she went to learn her body a little bit.

🖍 Got some markers and paper for her to color on if she was bored of the movie.
🍫And some m&ms for her reward!
Today is not her first day going on the potty. Randomly over the last year she would grab the little potty and sit on it when Nathan would go potty. A couple times she would go.
Today I think is the first time she is aware when she does go. After her second time going today she stood up and said, “pee pee”. Other times in the past she has said she’s gone but has not.
Peyton loves Frozen and Bolt. I’m 32 weeks pregnant, so sitting on the floor and reading to her or singing songs, it’s just not the easiest thing for me. P doesn’t watch a lot of tv, so I thought today is a great day to spoil her in this way to keep her in an area by her potty to go.
After each time she went she told me and we ran and got an m&m! Then she got a sticker to put on her chart. I put the time under the sticker so I could follow how often she went.
After her second time of going on the potty I thought she was good for maybe a half hour. But nope. She went on the slide we have in the family room, and went on the rug in the playroom. Three times she went in ten minutes! So that threw me off!
My strategy was keeping her on the potty with snack that made her thirsty and her favorite movies. Then once she went she got her treat and got to run around for at least 20 minutes with panties on before I had her sit down again.
I put a pull up on her for nap time. She took a crazy long 3 hour nap today! She woke up at 2 with a full diaper and then didn’t have to go for a long time. After nap I gave her lunch and she sat on the potty for close to two hours!
She got up to go look at her chart and had an accident on the floor! Bummer. She had been sitting for so long!
She did pretty good for her first day! She stayed on the potty while I made dinner. But like a lot of moms, I got dinner for everyone, got the kids seconds while I was still putting my plate together and P had an accident at the table. Then after dinner it’s clean everything up and put the food away. I couldn’t keep an eye on her. So I stopped for the day and put a diaper on her. We shall see how tomorrow goes!

Intro For Potty Training P

P is two years and two months. N was potty trained by now, but I knew we had a lot of big moves and transitions in our near future so I didn’t want to start potty training her for her to only regress when we moved across the country.
She randomly wakes up some mornings and says “mommy pee pee hurt”. A couple weeks ago she was screaming and crying when saying it, so we took her to urgent care to see if she had a UTI, but she didn’t and got creams prescribed to help with a cut she gave herself when she took her diaper off during nap time the day before.
So today was a morning she was walking funny and upset, telling me, “pee pee hurt”. I don’t know exactly what is hurting and I don’t know when she goes potty since she’s in a diaper, so I decided while Texas is having this crazy rain storm and we’re inside all day anyways, it’s time to potty train her and get to know her pattern of when she goes and how often.
With N I wrote on this blog about his potty training. He was pretty easy! And he went often. P does not go often, it makes it a little hard actually! Wish me luck! Here we go!!!

Potty Training Update.

Just wanted to update you all on potty training! It’s been over a month since we started this new adventure of going to the bathroom on a potty instead of in a diaper! So to share some success and regressions with you.

Success:

🔸 I have only changed one dirty diaper since March 1st. We haven’t had a #2 accident in over 3 weeks! I am told once a day, sometimes twice a day, “mommy poo poo” and he sits on his potty and goes! The one diaper I did change we were out and about out of town ALL DAY, and normally he won’t go and hold it to the next day but this day he went. He told me he had to go and went in his diaper and I wasn’t even mad! He’s not even two and I’m so proud of him.

🔸 If we are home we rock a pull up or underwear!

🔸 If he has an accident where he pees on the floor he comes and tells me and I am able to clean it up! He doesn’t like making messes, so I think seeing that he made a mess helps to my advantage of him wanting to make it to the potty on time.

Regression

🔹 He doesn’t like spending the time every 20 minutes to go pee on the potty. So we rock a couple different pairs of underwear a day.

🔹 As the mother, I am not on my A game. The flu hit our house, pregnancy symptoms hit me like a brick wall some days, and I have not looked into or researched how to have him go in public. He has gone once on a big potty while I hold him and he didn’t like it. He was scared. So I need to look into that.

🔹 A pull up is real easy for my tired self, so I just need to be consistent again and finish the job of fully potty training him.

🔹 Some of the days that we are home all day, Nathan hates to put on underwear. He will whine, “momma diaper, momma diaper” haha it’s work for him, and he has to stop his playing to go sit on his potty.

————

I will continue to post as this journey continues! As I find what works and what doesn’t!

Potty Training Day 3

Woke up with a full pull up and still went a little on the potty before breakfast. We had a poo poo accident, and he got upset today about it. He kept asking me to clean it up, but I wanted to clean him up first.

He did want cookies today, but not every time. He is also going longer periods of time between trips to the potty.

Woke up from nap dry and went pee pee the most he’s ever gone in the potty!!

We also went to Target today. He could have gone a couple of drops, but when we got home his pull up felt dry and he went pee pee lots on his potty! That was very exciting!

We didn’t have any accidents in the afternoon but as we got to after dinner, Nathan got tired. He had a couple accidents playing but he also made it to the potty to go poo poo!

He totally understands the concept of going to the bathroom on his potty! He goes in there by himself and goes and yells, “Yay!!” Then comes to me and tells me to go look haha!

We really worked on wearing underwear today! Keeping his underwear around his ankles while sitting on the potty.

Today was another successful day! I feel like tomorrow will be even greater! I am very tired tonight! Potty training is on your feet, go go go all day long. It’s so much cleaning up! He went pee pee in his potty but it shot out somehow so I had to clean the whole bathroom floor! I have the highest respect for all the parents who have been before me and potty trained!! Way to go!

Potty Training Day 2

The start was rough. His pull up was full from either over night or because I didn’t get up and get him to the potty in time after he woke up. He made himself tinkle in the potty but asked for a banana instead of a cookie which was perfect because it was breakfast time.

After breakfast he didn’t want to go. Maybe he didn’t need to go yet after overnight and his breakfast hadn’t digested yet or he didn’t want to haha.

Right after breakfast I was loading the dishes into the dishwasher and Nathan said, “ut-oh mommy. Poo poos”. I looked and he had gone a little poop on the kitchen floor. I told him it was okay and we ran to the potty where he finished going! He went a lot. Then we went to flush it and he got really mad and me and cried! He didn’t want his poo poos down the potty! I felt so bad and tried not to laugh because he was so hurt. He was also concerned about me cleaning the little poop in the kitchen. So we cleaned that up and moved on with our morning.

He didn’t go pee pee for about twenty minutes after breakfast which compared to yesterday was a really long time!! He didn’t want the cookie, so that didn’t work as an incentive, so I thought of his favorite thing! The vacuum! If he went pee pee he got to vacuum. Well guess who got on the potty and went pee pee right away?! That’s right, Nathan did! He didn’t go very much but I felt better that he went.

Today I locked him in my bathroom with me so I was able to get ready. Yesterday I brushed my teeth and that was all. He never had an accident in there.

I had bible study this morning so potty training continued at my moms house. She said he did a great job and never had an accident.

This afternoon he had a small accident of poop on the tile again, but not any pee pee accident. He is also much better at flushing his poo poo down the toilet.

Today he is very much into washing his hands. We get a thick book, put that on the potty and he can almost reach the water. This afternoon washing hands has turned into a potty incentive!

Today he liked wearing underwear. He went longer periods of time with out running to the potty and had less accidents, so underwear today were helpful for him to not be naked all the time.

Tonight he is going into the bathroom all by himself and going pee pee! I love that his potty sings to him because then I can hear when he does all by himself and still give him lots of praise! He had a very small accident on his toy car. I caught him randomly tearing off toliet paper and running. I followed him and he cleaned up his little accident!

Bath time is a great break for me! Cleaning his little potty and being overly excited all day is tiring so I need a small break. Letting him play in the bath has been really helpful to just let me sit and breath!

Nathan was naked until right before bedtime. He doesn’t like putting on a pull up, but I just remind him when he wakes up he can be naked again haha. I am very impressed with this little boy and day 2! Potty training keeps you busy for sure and has made the last couple days fly by!

Have a great night!!

Potty Training Day 1

If you want to know how I introduced the potty to Nathan, it’s in a previous post: https://kymberlyhudson.wordpress.com/2016/03/01/starting-the-potty/

When I woke up today potty training was not on my mind. My best friend had sent me just a day or so before, pictures of her son in underwear and I truly thought in my head, “I don’t have the energy to potty train yet”. So I really haven’t had potty training on my mind! My plans today were to go to the park, go to recycling, anything to keep us busy. I want this week to go fast because Friday we find out if baby number 2 is a boy or girl. So time is moving slow for me these days.

After breakfast Nathan was very upset about his diaper and kept asking for it to be off. He had gone poop and was not enjoying it on him.

I changed his diaper and then he said, “mommy potty”. Caught off guard I took him to his potty in the bathroom and he went pee pee in his potty!!! Then he asked for a cookie lol.

Nathan is allergic to eggs so he doesn’t get many sweets. I’m not against that so I also don’t go out of my way to make him eggless cookies or brownies. He hates eating fruit and veggies so I don’t want to pour tons of sugar into him when he’s not eating the good stuff. But one shopping day I picked up some Nilla Wafers that are egg free.

I’m breaking these cookies into tons of pieces! Some times he gets a sliver haha. He can make himself go potty just to have a cookie! If I gave him whole cookies he would have ate over 20 cookies before 1130am!

I learn I needed today:

1. Pull ups for nap time, or if you don’t want to do pull ups I read that puppy pads tapped to the bed are great, just don’t go back to diapers.

2. A potty. We have the fisher price one. There is tons! His sings to him and tells him “yay” after he goes, which he absolutely loves!! I picked it based on it was the only one at Target that day haha. It works perfect! He’s old enough now to push himself back a little on it so his pee pee doesn’t hit the front of the potty and squirt every where. The seat also comes off and can go on the regular potty and the potty can be a step for the sink or getting on the regular potty. It’s simple and cheap and works for us! But many bloggers have done research and found others that they really recommend!

3. Big boy underwear!!! In October we got him snoopy and Avenger underwear. He does love snoopy, I got the Avenger ones because of the three pack at Target was cheaper haha. I am very much about price and practicality haha. Today however he did not want to wear underwear! So I called my mom and she picked up some Mickey underwear! Well lately out of no where (he doesn’t watch tv) he is all about Mickey! So that made a huge difference! They have plain colors or just white if your child really doesn’t care.

4. The incentive, Nilla Wafers.

5. Your excitement. Be ready to be your most jumping, enthusiastic self! Nathan literally jumps up and down with me and we clap and say yay every time and run and get a cookie! Every time is like the first time! Always exciting!

6. Wipes, towels, Clorox wipes! For those accidents and when he jumps off the potty and drips a little pee on the floor!

7. Water or liquid to drink. My kid will only drink water.

I recommend asking your friends, reading many blogs and even listening to strangers tell you what worked for them. Every kid is different and when they are ready to potty train is different. Don’t ever be discouraged! It’s a learning process for them and you! They are learning how their body works and really so are you! I’ve learned that Nathan can make himself go just to get a cookie, but if he starts playing, he can’t hold it longer than 10 minutes. So I know to have him go potty before that 10 minutes arrives!

Don’t be discouraged by accidents and make sure they know it’s not a big deal! They can go on the potty next time! Nathan didn’t get upset over an accident, he would tell me, “ut-oh” and run to the potty haha.

It’s day 1 so I’m still learning!! But I didn’t want to forget any of what has happened! Good luck!!!

It’s a high of 75 today, so he’s running around naked and loving it!
By the end of the night he was going into the bathroom and going pee pee all by himself. I was cooking dinner at one point and heard his potty sing to him and ran in and was super excited!

Nathan didn’t love wearing underwear today. And as many times as we went to the potty, sometimes they got in the way. It can be a lot to pull them down quick when they are trying to make it to the potty on time.

He only had once accident from 3pm- to bedtime!

He was naked until 7:58pm and bedtime is 8pm. It was a very long day but so worth it!!!

Starting the Potty

When I write I can go into much detail and have to constantly tell myself to, “wrap it up” haha. So writing about potty training was a really long blog so I wanted to break it up.

In this post I’m going to give you a little back story in how we started introducing the potty! So here it is….

Today is March 1st. I noticed Nathan was interested in the potty this past October. So five months ago we got him a potty and underwear. He was 17 months. He caught on right away. I thought he was going to pick it up and we would be done with diapers. I’m not sure why we slowly stopped on October, but a couple weeks later I was hit with some morning sickness and diapers were my best friend.

Nathan is allergic to eggs so he doesn’t get many sweets. I’m not against that so I also don’t go out of my way to make him eggless cookies or brownies. He hates eating fruit and veggies so I don’t want to pour tons of sugar into him when he’s not eating the healthy stuff easily. But one shopping day I picked up some Nilla Wafers which are egg free.

I had been reading tons of blogs on potty training boys and asking all my friends what worked for them! Many told me an incentive was really important so my gut told me that these Nilla Wafers were my ticket to no diapers.

Most nights before bath time we have Nathan sit on the potty and try to go. If he does, he gets a cookie and if he doesn’t it’s okay. I talk to him as I go potty (which being pregnant is all the time). I talk to him about his body parts and when he toots. I felt it was important for him to know key terms and what was happening to his body.

These are tips I was given or read that I really liked and stuck with me. Not everything here I am doing because I’m rolling with how Nathan is learning and what is best for him. But I want to remember these tips for the future. Maybe they will help my other kids one day!
Books- get some potty training books and read to the child about it.

Modeling going potty with a bear or doll how to wear underwear and sit on the potty. You can ever have a surenge behind the bear or doll and “make the bear or doll go pee pee”.

I’ve read in blogs that boys under 3 are hard to potty train. Nathan is still 1, so every kid is really different.

I’ve also read it can take up to 3 days of being at home all day to really get it. I can’t follow this because we have so many plans every week. So I’ll keep you posted with what happens!

I’ve read about sticker charts and incentives of going places. Nathan doesn’t really get the chart. His little mind is all about right in that moment!

I really wanted to do most of these but I wasn’t prepared to start potty training. I went with what Nathan was ready for and he was ready before me!

I’ve loved reading what moms have done. It’s made me get a large amount of ideas and form to what I’m doing today!
